PUMICE Overview of the RockPumice is one of the most well known igneous rocks. It is an extrusive rock which means it forms on the outside of the volcano that forms over a short period of time. It often forms in many different colors listed below. It is interesting because it does not have any minerals in it so it is fine grain so it is smooth and it is also interesting because it can float in water as you can see below.. It can and does form in the United States.

  • Colors- Light Colored/White To Gray, normally but it comes in a variety of colors such as, yellow, brown, and a dull red
  • How it forms- Very Rapid solidification from a lava that has been shot up into the air and releasing gases
  • Any Minerals- No minerals found in it.
  • Where it's from- It forms from volcanic eruptions mostly from Italy but other major producers are Greece, Chile, Spain, and the US
  • Uses- It's used for making light weight concrete, polishes, additives for cement, the light weight concrete has been used since the romans were around.
